A Life Behind the Lens
"What began as a childhood curiosity became a way to reconnect with the natural world."
Michael Hayes is a Nebraska-based wildlife and conservation photographer and the founder of The Silent Wild. His love of photography began in childhood with Kodak 110 cameras, disposable film, and Polaroids. From 35mm photography and his school's yearbook team to early digital cameras in college and today's mirrorless systems, photography has remained a constant throughout his life.

Outside photography, Michael has built a career in business resiliency, helping organizations prepare for uncertainty and navigate challenging circumstances. While rewarding, his professional life has also taught him the importance of stepping away, slowing down, and finding perspective.

For Michael, photography provides that opportunity. Time spent outdoors, whether observing wildlife in the early morning light or exploring a quiet trail, allows him to disconnect from everyday demands and reconnect with the natural world.

His photographic style reflects that connection. Drawn to solitude, natural light, atmospheric landscapes, and the often-overlooked details of wildlife behavior, Michael seeks to create images that encourage viewers to pause, look closer, and discover something meaningful.

Over time, his appreciation for photography and the natural world developed into a desire to share more than images alone. That growing sense of purpose would eventually become the foundation for The Silent Wild.
02 / THE PURPOSE
The Story Behind The Silent Wild
The story matters as much as the photograph.
The Silent Wild was founded in 2026 by Michael Hayes, bringing together a lifelong interest in photography, a deep appreciation for the outdoors, and a desire to share the stories behind the images.
As Michael spent more time observing wildlife and exploring natural places, he became increasingly interested in understanding the relationships between animals, their habitats, and the environments that sustain them. He recognized that every photograph represents just one moment in a much larger story.
The Silent Wild grew from a desire to share those stories, not simply the images themselves. Through original wildlife photography, field experiences, and conservation-focused storytelling, it seeks to introduce people to the natural world in ways that inspire curiosity, appreciation, and understanding.
Rooted in a belief that a greater connection with nature can encourage a stronger commitment to its protection, The Silent Wild celebrates both the familiar and the often-overlooked wildlife and wild places that share our planet.
Today, The Silent Wild is an evolving creative venture built around a simple purpose: sharing authentic images and meaningful stories that encourage people to look closer, discover more, and develop a deeper appreciation for the natural world.

03 / ARTIST STATEMENT
Why I Photograph

Photography gives me an opportunity to step away from the demands of everyday life, slow down, and reconnect with the natural world. What began as a childhood interest has become something deeply personal, a creative outlet that allows me to find perspective, appreciate the present, and experience the world a little differently.

I am drawn to the quieter moments in nature. The first light of morning, the stillness of an open landscape, and the subtle behaviors of wildlife that often go unnoticed. I find as much beauty in these ordinary moments as I do in the extraordinary ones.

My approach to photography is rooted in patience, observation, and respect for the animals and environments I encounter. I believe wildlife should be allowed to behave naturally, without interference for the sake of an image. Sometimes that means waiting for hours, and sometimes it means simply enjoying the experience without taking a photograph at all.

Through my work, I hope to share not only what I see, but something of what I experience in those moments. I want my photographs to encourage people to pause, look closer, and appreciate the beauty and complexity of a world that continues whether we are watching or not.

For me, the value of photography lies not only in the images we create, but also in the connections we make along the way.
04 / OUR MISSION
Telling the Stories Nature Cannot Speak
The Silent Wild exists to bring people closer to the natural world through original wildlife photography and thoughtful conservation storytelling.

Every photograph captures a moment, but the story extends far beyond the image. By exploring the lives of animals, the habitats they depend upon, and the challenges they face, The Silent Wild seeks to inspire curiosity, deepen understanding, and encourage a greater appreciation for the natural world.

Our purpose is simple: to help people see more, understand more, and recognize why the wildlife and wild places around us are worth protecting.
Explore.
Observe.
Discover the world beyond the familiar.
Learn through patience and curiosity.
Respect.
Protect.
Put wildlife and nature first.
Encourage care for the natural world.
05 / FIELD GEAR
The Tools I Trust in the Field and Beyond
Cameras, lenses, field essentials, and the tools that help bring my photography to life.
My photography begins with curiosity, patience, and time spent observing the natural world. The equipment I carry helps me respond when a moment unfolds, whether that means photographing distant wildlife, working in changing light, or taking a closer look at an overlooked detail.
Each piece of gear has a purpose, along with strengths and limitations. I choose tools that support the way I work and let me stay focused on the wildlife and the experience around me.
On my Field Gear page, I share the equipment I use, why I've chosen it, and what I've learned through experience. Whether you're just beginning or exploring new tools, I hope these insights help you make informed choices about the equipment that best suits your photography.
The cameras and lenses behind my wildlife and landscape photographs, why I chose them, and where they work best.
The tripods, bags, accessories, and practical gear that support long days outdoors and help me adapt to changing conditions.
The tools and workflow I use to review, organize, and develop my photographs, from the first look in the field to the finished print.
